My First Piece

I did it!  I sewed my very first piece of clothing.  It is simple, imperfect (C’est la Vie!), and I am so excited about it.  Last night, I spent three and a half hours reading my sewing machine manual and trying to thread the machine.  After hours of trial and error, I decided to go to bed so I could wake up with a fresh perspective.  As soon as I sat down at my sewing machine today, it sort of just clicked in my mind how to thread the machine!  My finished product ended up being much smaller than I intended because I kept trying over and over again to fix my mistakes.  I used muslin as my fabric because it is inexpensive, making it a great material to practice with.  After I was happy with the shape of the blouse, I sewed a piece of gold/creme ribbon at the top and fastened a bow.

Now that I know how to operate the machine, I can’t wait to get practicing.  This piece is actually one of my assignments for the Parsons and Teen Vogue Certificate Program.  I have been putting it off for so long because I was afraid to start sewing.  I know it sounds silly, but sometimes when I am nervous to start something, I shut down completely.  I am sure that there is much trial and error in my future, but now I am excited about it!  My first piece of clothing isn’t complex, one of the stitches is loose (oops!), the collar is a bit crooked; and despite all of that I want to celebrate because even though it didn’t turn out quite like I hoped, I finally decided to get past my fear that I wouldn’t be able to assemble something that even resembled a shirt.  I am majoring in Fashion Design in college, and it is something I don’t have a lot of experience with.  I talk about fashion, write about fashion, and style outfits all the time; but designing and creating my own pieces will be something new and different to me.

❤ Celebrate all of the new things that the future holds.  Along the way, there will be bumps.  Such is life!  I love that saying.  This card is made by Rifle Paper Co., and I cannot wait to fill my dorm room with their beautiful cards!  They are like artwork to me, and a unique way to express personality.  Also, I love Lauren Conrad’s new book Celebrate.  It is a beautiful book filled with creative and elegant ways to celebrate all of the fun occasions in life.

Thank you so much for reading!

Xo, Carly
